Short Update: Bolivia confirms COVID-19 outbreak in country’s largest prison as prisoner releases remain minimal

FT Admin - June 3, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions, Prisoner releases

Bolivian authorities reported on May 16th that at least 25 prisoners have tested positive for COVID-19 in Palmasola Prison. Palmasola is Bolivia’s largest and most restive prison, with some 7,000 people incarcerated. Inmates had rioted the week before demanding to be released after two prisoners with COVID-19 symptoms died. Both inmates were confirmed to have died of the virus.

Although Bolivian authorities have announced release procedures, judicial sources cited by Human Rights Watch report that only two inmates have been released due to COVID-19.

See DW’s report on the riot here, Infobae’s report on the outbreak here, and Human Right Watch’s article on Latin American prisons here (all in Spanish).
