Short Update: In Belgium, courts and tribunals adjust their holidays hoping to offset the effects of the COVID-19 crisis

July opens the so-called "active judicial holidays” in Belgium to catch up with the backlog of cases. Courts and tribunals will adjust their vacation hearings to compensate for the effects of the health crisis, and priority will be given to the availability of magistrates able to hear urgent cases, particularly of detained persons, but the courts and tribunals will not freeze all activities.  

These are exceptional circumstances and exceptional measures, to avoid a large backlog of cases caused by the health crisis, which will inevitably cause a congestion of hearings to deal with exceptional offenses related to COVID-19 –they will be processed in September.  

In some criminal jurisdictions, five or six additional hearings have been scheduled during this vacation period to deal with non-detainee cases.
