Short Update: Belgian inmates manufacture masks, virtual visits available in prisons

FairTrialsAdmin - May 4, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions

Earlier this week, it was reported by media outlet RTBF that the Belgian government is currently deploying virtual visit capabilities in prisons. One secure computer for each hundred inmates will be set up; inmates should enjoy at least one twenty-minute virtual visit from friends or relatives each week. Physical visits have been put on hold since mid-March.

Separately, RTBF reported that inmates have manufactured around 42,000 protective masks since the beginning of the epidemic, according to a spokesperson for the prisons administration. These masks are intended for inmates themselves, but also prison staff and other public administrations.
