Short Update: ACLU and Prison Policy Initiative publish a report grading coronavirus responses in US prisons and jails

FairTrialsAdmin - June 29, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions, Prison monitoring

The ACLU and Prison Policy Initiative have published a report in which they graded each state’s actions to protect incarcerated people and facility staff from COVID-19.

The report finds that despite clear information and calls for action, state responses ranged from disorganized or ineffective to just non-existent. The data in the report reveals that no state has done enough and that all states failed to implement a cohesive, system-wide response to protect and save lives.

The authors of the report have evaluated each state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in four areas: availability of testing and personal protective equipment, reduction of prison and jail population, issuance of directives or orders accelerating the release from state prisons of medically vulnerable individuals and/or those near the end of their sentence, availability of regular updates and tracking of COVID-19 in the state prison system.

Most states received the low grade of ‘F’, with a few receiving the highest reported grade of ‘D’, which is still less than half of the 100 points that could be scored for an appropriate response to the COVID-19 crisis in all four areas.
