Short Update: 40 inmates killed in a prison riot in Venezuela after relatives barred from bringing food

FairTrialsAdmin - May 4, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions

A prison riot  has left 40 people dead, including a warden and injured 50 more. A lawmaker has stated that the riot broke out in response to inmates’ relatives being banned from bringing food during visitations, which is common in Venezuelan prisons. Ban on prison visits was introduced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Venezuela’s severely overcrowded prisons.
