Short Update: 32,500 prisoners in Brazil released due to the pandemic, as infection rates increase by 800%

The Brazilian National Council of Justice renewed the recommendation that guides the release of prisoners to avoid mass contamination of COVID-19 in the Brazilian prison system in June. According to the Council, since March, 32,500 people have been released. But at the same time, it has been reported that there has been an 800% increase in prison contamination rates, with 1,867 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 47 deaths.
