Short Update: 13 die in Peru during police operation against party banned by COVID-19

FT Admin - August 24, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Extended police powers

At least 13 people were suffocated in a crush during a police raid on a nightclub in Lima, where a party was being held despite a ban on gatherings.

This month Peru reimposed stricter restrictions on movement because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There were thought to be around 120 people at the Thomas Restobar in Lima's Los Olivos. According to the authorities, when the police raided the club, partygoers tried to escape through the second-floor disco's only door, trampling one another and becoming trapped in the confined space. Most of the victims were in their twenties.

The Police Chief General said no firearms or tear gas were used during the raid. However, this was disputed by some who were at the party and others living near the nightclub, who said that the police threw tear gas canisters at those inside, and boxed them in.
