COVID-19 in Latin America: Actions of the Juvenile Criminal Justice Systems

FairTrialsAdmin - June 2, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions, Prison monitoring

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for various justice systems around the world, particularly regarding those referred to the juvenile justice system. Civil society organizations have identified the urgency to have quality information on protection measures and protocols of action for the prevention of infections inside juvenile detention centres. The truthful and effective information allows to verify that the fundamental rights to life, health and information of adolescents deprived of their liberty are being guaranteed. We consider it valuable to know what actions the juvenile criminal justice systems in Latin America are implementing, in order to be able to share good practices at the regional and national levels.

For this reason, the ILANUD, the International Centre for Human Rights of the University of Northwestern, Defensa de Niños y Niñas - Internacional, Justicia Juvenil Internacional, and Fair Trials, have collectively developed two questionnaires:

● One addressed to the Directors of the centres of deprivation of liberty (psychologists, social workers and educators) and

● One addressed to operating authorities of the Juvenile Justice System in the respective jurisdictions (prosecutors, judges, magistrates, and public defenders and specialized lawyers in juvenile justice / criminal justice for adolescents).

The information collected in the questionnaires will be systematized later by country.
