Ensuring Meaningful Social Reintegration: Fair Trials Submission to OHCHR

Published: (Last updated: )

Fair Trials, in collaboration with the European Impacted Persons Advisory Council (EIPAC), has submitted a response to the OHCHR | Call for input – OHCHR comprehensive study on human rights and the social reintegration of persons released from detention and persons subjected to non-custodial measures, pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 57/9.

Our submission highlights four key initiatives in Europe that demonstrate the importance of centering impacted persons as active participants in justice reform, rather than passive recipients of reintegration efforts. These programs showcase how leadership, advocacy, and direct engagement by individuals with lived experience can drive systemic change, challenge stigma and discrimination, and create sustainable pathways to reintegration.

At the heart of this submission is a fundamental belief: successful reintegration can only be achieved when those most affected by the justice system are included as key stakeholders in shaping policies and solutions. The work of EIPAC embodies this approach, advocating for fairer justice systems that recognize the agency, dignity, and expertise of impacted individuals.
