Short Update: Romanian courts are turning to videoconferencing facilities for hearings

FairTrialsAdmin - April 15, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice

Romanian courts are seeking to adapt to the COVID-19 crisis by trying to access different applications for videoconferences, such as Google Meet or Zoom. The Bucharest Court has now a section for videoconferencing on the website where the parties can download the agreement for participating in the videoconference. Moreover, the Bucharest Court is also reported to be using Skype technology for hearings. The hearings of the High Court of Cassation and Justice are also taking place via videoconference, each judge participating from their own office, through the system made available by the IT specialists of the High Court.

As for the efficiency of video conferencing, lawyers are reported to be saying that there is still a lack of coordination of the courts mainly due to the lack of experience with this technology (of the institutions and of the parties also). There were cases for example in which one of the parties couldn’t hear anything because of technical issues.
