Public defenders in NYC have filed a federal lawsuit to stop the resumption of in-person court hearings. They argue that the reopening of court hearings in the midst of the sustained and devastating COVID-19 pandemic forces people to choose between their health and their liberty, since not attending the court can lead to a warrant and possibly incarceration. They denounce a rushed and unnecessary reopening of the courts and the lack of clear plan for ensuring people’s safety from the transmission of COVID-19.
