Short Update: European Prison Observatory publishes 8th COVID-19 update on prisons in Europe

The European Prison Observatory has published an update on what’s happening in European prisons in relation to COVID-19. 

  • In France, as of May 15, 120 inmates and 302 prison staff members have tested positive for Coronavirus. 

  • In the Netherlands, several people in prisons have been diagnosed with COVID-19, while prisoners protested against reduced outdoor time. 

  • In Romania, the right to visits, gifts and leave from prisons have all been suspended.   

  • In Spain, there are 60 infections among detainees and 258 among prison staff.
