Weekly Data published by HM Courts & Tribunals Service and reported by the Law Society Gazette confirms that, in the week ending 20 September 2020, there were 509,347 cases outstanding in the magistrates' courts and 48,713 in the Crown Court. While numbers in the magistrates' courts have reduced from a peak in July, and are reflective of the impact of extended and weekend hours and the opening of the Nightingale Courts, limited court space and rising crime numbers have led to week-on-week growth of the backlog since March 2020.
