Short Update: COVID-19 is more deadly among prison staff than prisoners in São Paulo

FairTrialsAdmin - September 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions, Prison monitoring

Statistics from the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat of São Paulo ("SAP", or Secretaria da Administração Penitenciária) show that the COVID-19 mortality rate among prison staff is seven times higher than among prisoners. According to the state government, 27 prison guards died from COVID-19 out of the 1,341 that tested positive. As for the prisoners, the state of São Paulo recorded 24 deaths out of the 4,703 confirmed cases. The mortality rate for staff is 0.77 per thousand cases, while for prisoners is 0.1 per thousand cases. However, doubts remain as to the accuracy and transparency of the official information provided, as well as the real access that prison population has to COVID-19 tests.
